Clare Arbuthnott is a Scottish artist brought up in the rural North East where from her earliest years the big skies of an agricultural landscape, pure light and furrow of the plough was to shape her vision. Born into a curious mix of farmers and artistic 'types' in part of the country where the influence of local literary notary Lewis Grassic Gibbon cast a long shadow, she has consistently been driven to paint and generally 'make things'. Clare's work pays tribute to these beginnings; in intuitive responses to colour, rhythms and patterns found within this familiar world.
Educated at art colleges and university in Cumbria, Edinburgh and Leith, Clare has now lived in the city for the past 20 years. From her Edinburgh studio; landscapes and other organic forms found outside or in the domestic sphere continue to be typical subjects. She has a particular interest in expressing form through colour by way of an increasingly abstracted language.
She takes great delight in the medium of paint and attempts to celebrate this in her work. She hopes this feeling will come across to you.
